Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a colorful mix of personalities, and a exciting storyline showcasing divine entities, evil spirits, and malevolent powers increasing in strength within the city.
Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 lie ahead.
The Soldiers Table Introduced
The third episode ended with a major cliffhanger and introduced the first table of adventurers who will branch out from the main group to undertake their own adventure, separate from the other two tables.
The combat-focused team includes Teor (brought to life by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).
Why Split the Party?
Considering a large ensemble, it was evident from the beginning that keeping everyone at a single group would be unworkable.
This explains, the opening chapters of the new season serve as an Prelude, intertwining the personal journeys before branching into three separate parties: Warriors, Planners, and Seekers.
Characteristics of the Combat Party
Per the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who prefer a traditionally charged battle-oriented gameplay experience where diplomatic options are rare.
Upon first impression, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might look unsuited, but the events of episode 3 show why these five characters are best suited for the combat party.
Reasons to Leave
To begin with, the group understands precisely where to proceed after a brutal opening clash with the antagonists.
A former ally of Thjazi—whose passing started the narrative’s action—exploited the foes for his personal gain, entering the hidden lair, attacking the rogue, and swiping all the powerful objects to dispose of.
The antagonist then settled his liabilities and escaped to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the city, with Cyd Pridesire hot on his heels.
Personal Motivations
Moreover, each character has a specific drive to depart the metropolitan area:
- The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, wants vengeance.
- The knowledgeable figure has experience in the northern area and advises that it is a dangerous location.
- Tyranny and The cleric, having defied his family’s wishes to execute the target and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
- But, their position as prominent individuals in the powerful family could assist the party access locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Additionally, The fighter swore a life debt to The savior for his deliverance and will now follow him everywhere.
Fugitives
Finally, all of them are sought by the rulers that rule Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind dangerous:
- The agile adventurer and The hero are known criminals.
- The strong figure and Wicander defied the influential house and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
- Teor is marked for death by the family.
This leaves them few options but to journey toward Timmony in search of Casimir.
What’s Next?
